This article aims to analyze a European view of the 17th century Spanish culture. Naude’s Advispour dresser une bibliothèque (1627) —translated twice into English: Instructions concerning erecting of a library (1661) and Advice on establishing a library (1950)— represents a wide set of bibliographic recommendations that constitute, among many other things, an excellent observatory of the Spanish culture in such a delicate time (AU)

Eclectics and breast cancer.

The medical faculties of antiquity, with the first one being the Hippocratic faculty, dealt thoroughly with the treatment of cancer. The Eclectic medical faculty was founded by Agathinos who was born in Sparta but taught and practised medicine in Rome during the period 60 - 100 A.D. The influences of his faculty were observed in the medical world until the 18th century.

Five personal examples are given illustrating the general principle that one can see if one looks or, conversely, that one cannot see anything that one believes not to exist.

Terapias combinadas en la esquizofrenia: ¿agregamos, mezclamos y confundimos o bien de-construimos y combinados? / Combined therapies for schizophrenia: add, mix and confuse, or rather deconstruct and combine?

Se realiza una reflexión sobre el estado actual de los programas terapéuticos o terapias que intentan combinar diversos tipos de terapias biológicas, psicológicas y psicosociales. Se ilustra el tema con viñetas clínicas de tratamientos de pacientes agorafóbicos y esquizofrénicos. La conclusión fundamental es que, hoy por hoy, con algunas excepciones, más que terapias combinadas se están practicando agregaciones de terapias o incluso mezclas más o menos confusas de terapias. Entre otros motivos, porque no se tienen en cuentan los criterios de calidad de una terapia, una consideración epistemológica más estricta de lo que debe ser una combinación de terapias, y la necesidad de de-construir las terapias previas y las combinadas y de investigar la eficacia, eficiencia, accesibilidad, etc de sus componentes. Con el fin de facilitar herramientas para la reflexión, se proponen una serie de tesis y principios para la organización de dichas terapias y se citan algunos intentos en tal sentido (AU)

Paper points out a reflection on the current state of the therapeutic programs or combined therapies using diverse types of biological, psychological and psycho-socials therapies. The topic is illustrated with clinical examples from the treatments of agoraphobics or schizophrenics patients. The fundamental conclusion is that, nowadays, with some exceptions, more than combined therapies we are practising aggregations of therapies or indeed mixed and more or less confused therapies. Among other reasons, because we have not enough account about the approaches of quality of a therapy, a consideration episthemologically stricter of those that it should be a combination of therapies, and the necessity of of-building the previous therapies and those combined and of investigating the effectiveness, efficiency, accessibility, and so on, of their components. With the purpose of facilitating tools for the reflection, I expose several thesis and principles for the organization of this therapies and I mention some intents in such a sense (AU)

William Tod Helmuth and Andrew Jackson Howe. Surgical sectarianism in 19th-century America.

Nineteenth-Century American society was particularly prone to the establishment of numerous unorthodox medical practices and their alternative therapies. The most influential of the unorthodox medical groups were the homeopathic and eclectic sects. From within the ranks of homeopathy and eclecticism, William Tod Helmuth and Andrew Jackson Howe, respectively, emerged to become the best-known sectarian surgeons of their era. Through a review of their lives this forgotten chapter in the history of American surgery is recollected.
